| Q: | Is Osteopathy painful? |
| A: | Some techniques employed can cause some tissue tenderness, which is normal, but for the most part treatment is pain free. |
| Q: | Do you crack the spine? |
| A: | The noise heard is not a literal breaking of bone, it is not fully understood what causes the cracking noise but it is thought that during manipulation of the spine, air bubbles form between the joints of the spine, they burst and this causes the characteristic “crack“. |
| Q: | How many treatments will I need? |
| A: | A common question, which is almost impossible to precisely answer. There are a number of factors which implicate a precise answer, the general health of the person, previous history of the presenting complaint, family medical history, lifestyle. Having said this patients normally make a significant improvement after 3-4 treatments. This is however an average, and it may take less or more treatment sessions to correct an ailment. |
| Q: | Can I claim treatment on my health insurance? |
| A: | Many medical insurers do cover for Osteopathic treatment, but the onus is on the patient to find out if their policy covers Osteopathic treatment. |
| Q: | Do I need to be referred by my Doctor? |
| A: | No most patients self refer to an osteopath. |
| Q: | What should I wear? |
| A: | Patients are often asked to disrobe down to their underwear or maybe to remove a single item of clothing. Patients who are uncomfortable with this are asked to wear loose, comfortable clothing. |
| Q: | Will I need a regular check up? |
| A: | This will depend on the nature of the problem. Often time patients with long standing problems will benefit from a regular check - up as a form of maintenance care. |
